Tytuł/Title: Not monks but notaries 

Abstract: When you first ask who could read and write in the Middle English period, many think of monks in monasteries. Monks did produce manuscripts but the period is one that sees an explosion in lay literacy. The newly literate are the middle classes, specifically those involved in trade, administration, and law. These are also areas where French influence is strong following the Norman Conquest. It is this newly literate class that is behind innovations in handwriting and spelling. In this talk, I present a selection of these innovations.

PL: Profesor Jacob Thaisen dorastał w Kopenhadze, mieszka w Norwegii i zajmuje się historią języka angielskiego, badaniami nad rękopisami i piśmiennictwem oraz językiem pisanym. Obecnie pracuje na stanowisku profesora nadzwyczajnego na Uniwersytecie w Oslo. W przeszłości pracował jako profesor nadzwyczajny na Uniwersytecie w Stavanger (Norwegia) oraz wykładał na Uniwersytecie im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu. W swoich badaniach korzysta z metod ilościowych i opiera się na socjolingwistyce i dialektologii. 

Wykład odbędzie się w języku angielskim. 

EN: Professor Jacob Thaisen grew up in Copenhagen, lives in Norway, and does research on the history of the English language, manuscripts and written language. He works as an associate professor at the University of Oslo. In the past, he worked as an associate professor at the University of Stavanger (Norway) and as a lecturer at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. His research uses quantitative methods and is informed by variationist sociolinguistics and dialectology. 

The lecture will be held in English.
